In my life this week…
Most everything this week has evolved around portfolio. A while back I did a written interview for HammockTracks ‘Who Homeschools’ Series. There I answer a number of questions about why we chose to homeschool, the schedule we keep, some curriculum choices and a ton more.
I had one of those was God inspired moments (I hope) where I ended up in a random conversation about homeschooling with a random woman at the grocery store. I leave Philip at home with his school work and he is now old enough to babysit. Thus I leave Ian with him as well. So I used to have Ian at the store with me. In the grocery store I always feel that I have to be a little careful in how I act or I might give the wrong impression. Having Ian along gave me some more leeway. So I am exiting the grocery store and the women in front of me pauses to throw out the strawberry that one of her kids had decided she was done with. She mutters the standard apology and I respond that I have three kids so I understand. I suddenly realize that I don’t have my toddler buffer with me and blurt out that I homeschool and my oldest is babysitting my youngest. She turns and asks which Distance Learning (DL) provider we are enrolled with. Crisis averted, we talk for a minute then continue on our way. It turns out she had just applied for a position at a DL that we had considered. Did I give her another place to apply at? Maybe. God works in mysterious ways. I will probably never know the answer.
In our homeschool this week…
This week has been all about the portfolio. As I am writing this we are pretty much done. I need to take some pictures and he has a couple of thing to polish. Correction by the time I got this post up it is done.
Last Friday he did his first cooking class. He has been counting down the days to this weeks. Last week they made Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies. This week is Chicken Alfredo. I didn’t get to stay to watch but judging by the results the kids were given a lot of freedom. They all learned a lot but they were also given the freedom to mess up. Philip and his partner’s cookies were great but some not so much.
My favorite thing this week was…
One way or another the portfolio is being submitted on Friday. Thus my stress level will drop significantly.
My kiddos favorite thing this week was…
By far it was the cooking class, three more weeks.
Books I’m Reading…
I finished reading Project-Based Homeschooling by Lori McWilliam Pickert. I quite enjoyed it. Some of the stuff she talks about we already do. Some I will be implementing into our homeschool. Some I would love to do but I will have to take it a day at a time.
I’m cooking…
I am coming to the conclusion that around portfolio time I need to have meals in the freezer or fall back to my crockpot recipes. My spell checker just tried to change crockpot to crackpot so now I’m trying to come up with some crackpot crockpot recipes. Rereading this before posting and apparently I was going a little loopy from lack of sleep last night.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share (silly, serious or both!)…
You know you are a SAHD if you have ever changed a toddler just before your wife gets home to hide what he ate for at snack.
A toddler that has eaten something massively chocolate and covered himself head to toe in chocolate is a bit of a give away that we didn’t have a ‘healthy’ snack.
