Homeschool Journal Year 2 Week 7

In my life this week…

We returned for our trip to Southern California on Sunday. I am writing a series of posts about that so I will be brief here. We all had a wonderful time. It is hard to say what was our favorite was but the Legoland Hotel was well worth the expense. We also returned to snow, fortunately not were we are but we flew through Calgary that was getting heavy snow. That caused a slight delay but nothing really out of the ordinary.

The rest of my week has been spent trying to get back organized. Ten days of laundry in one giant bag is a bit of backlog to go through.

In our homeschool this week…

Margaret Portfolio todo list

We are in to crunch time as our portfolios are due Nov 15th. Margaret is well on her way although she has crossed of stuff that I am going to ask for rewrites and error checking on. Philip is always a last minute person but he does have more done than his list suggests, mainly because he doesn’t cross it off until I say it is done.

Philip Portfolio todo list

We took Monday off to recover from our trip as we got in fairly late on Sunday night. My wife also took the day off. We spent the day unpacking, downloading photos and we had the kids write a short bit on the trip. Philip did quite we on it but Margaret got distracted putting in photos.

My kiddos favorite thing this week was…

Halloween Costumes

Well if I don’t count our trip and I’m sort of categorizing that as its own time period it would have to be Halloween. We have some houses around here that got overboard on the decorations. Going to those houses is always fun. They also got to got trick or treating at my wife’s work and that is also a lot of fun.

Things I’m working on…

I am busy writing out a day by day account of our trip. At the end of each day I wrote out notes of things that were memorable or thoughts that I had. Those are acting as the backbone of the writing I am doing now and are reminding me of other things. I am up to 4000 words so far and I still have 4 days left to write for. With error checking, adding photos and adding stuff that I remember rereading what I currently have I hope to start posting them next week. I will be posting them in parts.

I’m cooking…

I still had a lot of leftover turkey from before we left. I had stuck the whole thing in the freezer. It took a while to defrost and I pulled off meat every once in a while as I had it in the microwave. The end result was a giant pot of Turkey Corn Chowder. It is yummy but we are going to have to freeze the rest of the soup.

I’m praying for…

The girl that we had the benefit concert for a couple of weeks ago passed away while we were in California. We decided to hold off telling the kids until we were back home. She was in the midst of a bone marrow transplant, which is a tough part of the treatment when she had a pair of heart attacks. So we are praying for her family in this difficult time.

I’m Reading…

I have two books currently on the go. The first Is Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. It is a fast moving science fiction action book that will probably only take me another day or two to finish.

The second is Dodger by Terry Pratchett. It is set in Charles Dickens’ London with the main character being Dodger from Oliver Twist. It is well worth the read.

  1. Looks like it was a nice vacation and fun Halloween. Good luck with the portfolios. I’m so happy we don’t have to do anything like that here. Actually, we don’t have any paperwork at all. We don’t even have to register as homeschoolers. It’s pretty easy here.

Have a great weekend and can’t wait to read about the trip.
