Kid's Snowman - Olaf

Weekly Wrap up: Let it Snow

In my life this week…

First of all Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends.

We had our first heavy snow fall this week. Unfortunately it was a heavy, wet snow not the light fluffy stuff that we usually get. That resulted to some damage to our tree in the front yard. We have about a dozen branches broken with one really large one. The tree has been pruned each year so it was no threat to our house or the power lines. Unfortunately some power lines did come down and while they didn’t affect us, a few thousand were without power for 24 hours. I found this funny given Amber’s list over on Unexpected Homeschool last week. It means that I have spent some more time thinking about our preparations. It comes down to the fact that we have cold weather camping gear that would keep us warm and a camp stove that we can use outside on our covered deck. I do need to hide a supply of batteries for the flashlights.

The kids took advantage of the snow to make a snow fort and a snowman that they of course named Olaf. I thought they really caught his essence in snow. Unfortunately it was quite warm and Olaf did what snowmen do in summer.

We had another family over on Saturday. They have 5 children and their’s are younger. The oldest is a year younger than Philip and the youngest is a toddler. She got into everything. We need to do a better job of baby proofing for next time. It was a lot of fun. Philip showed their son a game on his computer called Kerbal Space Program. It has a very good physics engine so you actually have to know some physics to get into orbit and it goes on from there. The younger kids played with everything. It is always fun to play with new to them toys.

I took on the other half of the shelves from last week. Most of it was stuff from a now defunct church group that we used to be part of. We are returning the things that can be used to the diocese so some group can get some use out of them. A lot of it was paper or so old as to be useless.

I have to have a discussion with my wife about the electronics particularly the record player. We still have some vinyl that I think we are getting rid of…

In our homeschool this week…

We have been crunching through our lessons. The cool thing this week was using the RightStart math balance to weight things. As usual I ended up covering the next lessons material in the first one. I wasn’t supposed to explain what grams were until the second lesson. Oh well, he got it. I pulled out my digital kitchen scale at the same time so we could compare our results.

We are Reading…

Philip finished reading “Peter and the Star Catchers” which he quite liked. I see on Amazon that there are more books in the series.

I have just finished “What if” and I highly recommend it. I talked about it a couple of weeks ago.

Photo to share…

When we were in Jasper I took a photo of the Jasper Bear and said that I had a picture of me (possibly my brother???) with it from sometime in the late 70’s. Well here it is…
