Ian Grade 2 Curriculum

Ian is now in grade 2. We started two weeks ago now but it has been so busy I haven’t had time to write these posts. Ian skipped kindergarten basically because I started early and thus when it came time to enroll him he was deemed to have already done it. It means that math wise he is ahead but in reading and printing he is behind. We are focusing on those areas to start. With math I have plenty of wiggle room.

Math

He is halfway through Right Start Level B as he started it last year. We also have Right Start Level C for when he finished. Right Start B is what he needs to complete for grade 2.

Science

We are starting science this year with Solids, liquids and gases. We are using the book ‘Starting with Science – Solids, Liquids and Gases’ along with our own knowledge.

ADD TEXT

Next semester we will looking at Air Water and Soil. I have a book on soil for a resource that of course I can’t find. I plan on doing a Pop bottle erosion experiment. I also plan on growing plants in various conditions eg limiting light, air, water, watering with coffee, sand vs soil.

The third semester is about animals. We plan on having him sort photos of our trip to the zoo with him describing why he sorted them that way. I also have various books on animals. We are also planning on going to the park and watching tadpoles grow up.

English

We are continuing to work through ‘First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind’ and will move onto the second book hopefully around Christmas. We are doing Dolch words daily in the hope to catch him up. Right now it seems to be working. We are also using Raz Kids and plan to reach the end of level P this year.

Printing continues to be an issue. He sees typing as easier and it is a battle to make him see the need for printing. He does some printing via copy work in First Language Lessons. We also have ‘Printing Without Tears’.

He will also be doing Readers Theatre with Grandma and the older kids.

Social Studies

So far for Social Studies we have ‘Canada Map Book 1’ and we supplement it with doing similar activities on Google Maps. We also have ‘I can Make a Difference’ on order.

Arts

For art Ian will continue with piano and I am sure that other opportunities will come up.

Grade 7 Curriculum

This will be Philip’s third year homeschooling so we are pretty well settled into a routine. It is not exactly a stress free routine but we always get there in the end. Generally I point him at a subject with some basic guidelines and let him go at it, usually on Wikipedia. After a couple of weeks I talk to him and we come up with plans on what we are going to put in the portfolio. Getting him to demonstrate his knowledge is always the trickiest part. The last two years we have done a lot of writing on these subjects and while I can’t eliminate writing completely I can limit more than we have. Obviously I can’t from English but I can limit it in the science and social studies areas.

Grade 7

English

We have been using Student Writing Intensive but the kids got bored with it last year and want to try something new. So I am going to give Writing with Skill a try. I liked that the student and instructor books were reasonably priced. I feel the with English I need to be a little more hands on particularly with giving them instructions. Grandma is going to be helping out with the English so the ability for her to be able to give an assignment and then check on it the next time she visits will be great.

Science

The first term is going to be plate tectonics, the formation of rocks and layers of the earth. I have some good shows on that recorded. The rest we will cover with online resources, mostly wikipedia.

The second term is ecosystems. I plan on having him choose one and research the plants and animals that live it and how they are interconnected. To further that I have a game called Phylo that can be downloaded. The object of the game is to make an ecosystems that satisfies your creatures.

The third term is chemistry. So we need to define elements, compounds and mixtures. I have the book Elements so we will use that. We will also do some experiments demonstrating the difference betweem compounds and mixtures. We also have to cover the properties of matter and again that will be done through experiments. That will also cover the measurements of pH, solubility and concentration.

Social Studies

This year is ancient civilizations. Philip picked Babylon, Greece and China. I have paired Roman to Greece since they related. We will start with Babylon at Philip’s request. Generally I let him read about it on Wikipedia and books he finds at the library. Once he has some knowledge we will discuss projects and go in to more details with that. I also found Minecraft Homeschool which offers a course on ancient wonders that will fit in with the Roman and Greece research.

Math

We have been using IXL for our math these last two year and for the older two I intend to continue. We had some problems last year but was due to the lack of a plan and due to unforeseen circumstances not realizing are mistake until late in the year. For this year we found a listing of what sections are needed for each item in out PLOs.

Art

Generally I count Philip’s Irish Dance as his art for the year. Other things may pop up through the year and I would love to get him drawing more.

Second Language

Philip is going to continue learning Chinese but for the third year running we are going to switch our curriculum. The first year we did Rosetta Stone and that was excellent and gave him a solid base particularly in pronouncement. Last year we took courses through the local Chinese Society. This year I am going to try online resources including some YouTube videos.

Bible

Most of this will be covered by the Catechism classes that they attend. I do have so other things that I want to implement like daily prayer and having prayer journals.

Grade 5 Curriculum

This is our second year with Margaret in our homeschool and we learned somethings about her learning style last year. One she needs to have goals, she likes to check off boxes. Two, while she likes reading the books have to interest her. I have had better luck with living books and for the non fiction it is important that they are clear, to the point and not overly simplified. Three she like to do hands on things. The other advantage that I have is this is the first time that I’m teaching a grade that I have already done with Philip. Last time I had some confusion and trouble figuring out the requirements. This time I have a much better idea of what we need to cover.

Grandma is going to be helping out with the English so the ability for her to be able to give an assignment and then check on it the next time she visits will be great.

Science

In science we are going to start out with the human body and for that we have “Body Works” by Scholastic. We used a book from the same series last year for habitat and she really liked it. Also I didn’t like what I did with Philip from two years ago.

The second term will be simple machines. For that I have a large set of K’nex Education. We have one of the four sets from when Philip did Grade 5 but now they have a big set that has all four so I went with that.

Term three is Renewable and Non renewable resources. For that I have a lot of material from when Philip did it and we will mostly be using that. My plans never last to the end of the years so it will probably change by then.

Social Studies

We need to cover the formation of Canada and governments. Since we have a local election happening in November I am going to get Margaret involved, have her follow the candidates and ask some of her own questions.

We also have to cover the build of the Trans-Canada Railway, the gold rush and the fur trade. For those I have a number of living books, all from the “Dear Canada” series. We also need to cover immigration and I tied that into the building of the railway. I also have some more living books that will cover that. I also have “Lambs of Hell’s Gate” by Mary-Liz Bright.

The third term will be the resources of British Columbia from the Social Studies perspective but that ties in nicely with the science. Again I will be reusing from Philip’s grade 5 year.

Math

We have been using IXL for our math these last two year and for the older two I intend to continue. We had some problems last year but that was due to the lack of a plan and due to unforeseen circumstances not realizing are mistake until late in the year. Art

Art just happens. Margaret will continue to sing with mommy in the Irish music group. I will also put her in more water colour classes as she really enjoyed them and she did very well in them.

Second Language

Here in Canada we are required to start teaching a second language in Grade 5. In the public system that is generally French but we do have a choice. Margaret has chosen Spanish although she asked if she could learn Quenya (Lord of the Rings Elvish). Unfortunately that is not an option. We will be enrolling her in Rosetta Stone Spanish through the school we are enrolled with.

Bible

Most of this will be covered by the Catechism classes that they attend. I do have some other things that I want to implement like daily prayer and having prayer journals.
